The BCHF stands as the charitable pillar of the hospitality and tourism sector, dedicated to uplifting and empowering the individuals who tirelessly cater to your needs every day. Our mission revolves around extending a helping hand to those facing dire circumstances, particularly during their most challenging moments.
In the face of overwhelming medical challenges and the accompanying financial burdens, we offer unwavering support to both individuals and their families. Their tales of resilience and victory serve as a profound source of motivation, propelling us to unite and assist our fellow members of the hospitality community in times of need.
In 2006, the BC Hospitality Foundation's journey started with Michael Willingham's sudden battle with a brain aneurysm. This unexpected event left him partially paralyzed, unable to swallow, and struggling to breathe while sleeping. Against the odds, he fought back, managing to regain some mobility. However, the road ahead was daunting, with no apparent medical solution and significant financial strain.
Witnessing this struggle, Willingham's colleagues in the wine industry stepped in, raising $50,000 to alleviate some of the burden. This act of kindness deeply moved Willingham, prompting him to reflect on the precarious situation many in the service industry faced. He recognized that individuals like servers, cooks, and baristas often teetered on the edge of financial ruin due to unforeseen circumstances.
In gratitude for his support, Willingham suggested establishing a charitable organization to extend similar assistance to others in the hospitality sector. Together, they birthed the BC Hospitality Foundation (BCHF), dedicated to aiding industry workers experiencing financial crises due to serious health conditions. Each year, countless individuals in British Columbia's hospitality sector find themselves in dire straits with nowhere to turn. BCHF steps in when all other options have been exhausted, offering a lifeline in times of need.
Michael Willingham's legacy extends beyond his struggles; he became the catalyst for positive change, inspiring the creation of BCHF. Despite his ongoing challenges, he steadfastly supported the foundation's mission. His impact on the lives of many is immeasurable, ensuring he will always be remembered fondly.
In honour of his memory, Michael Willingham's Estate has established a Legacy Scholarship Fund, furthering BCHF's Industry Scholarship initiative.
